There are many perks to living on the Central Coast, including beautiful weather year-round, stunning scenery, and plenty of fun activities. However, like much of California, it also comes with the stressful reality of wildfire season. In this dry, drought-prone region, it’s essential for homeowners to stay prepared.

As fire season intensifies, now is the time to take proactive steps to protect your home or business. Here are four simple ways to stay fire-ready and safeguard what matters most.

1. Install and Test Fire Alarms

It may sound obvious, but functional smoke and fire alarms can be life-saving, and in California, many insurance companies now require proof of them for coverage. If you have any questions about what your homeowners insurance needs, please contact us and we can help.

Make sure alarms are installed on every level of your home and test them regularly. Replace batteries twice a year and never ignore a low battery signal.

2. Create a Family Wildfire Plan

Every household should have a wildfire plan, and everyone should know it by heart. Your plan should include:

  • An established meeting spot in case of evacuation
  • Multiple escape routes from every room in the house
  • A designated emergency contact outside of your area

In a crisis, seconds matter. Being overprepared can save lives.

3. Prepare Your Property

According to CAL FIRE, property owners can greatly reduce wildfire risk with these key strategies:

Create a Defensible Space
Start by clearing the first 5 feet around your home of anything flammable such as dry brush, firewood, outdoor furniture, or vehicles. Then, maintain a 30-foot safety zone around your home with trimmed grass, pruned trees, and cleared vegetation that could fuel a fire.

Use Fire-Resistant Building Materials
When building or renovating, choose materials that are less likely to ignite. Focus on key areas like your roof, vents, chimney, siding, windows, decks, fences, and garage.

Practice Fire-Smart Landscaping
Opt for drought-tolerant plants that are native to California and keep them well-watered and pruned. Trim tree branches to hang at least 6 feet above the ground and stay consistent with yard maintenance to reduce fire fuel.

4. Build and Maintain an Emergency Supply Kit

A well-stocked emergency kit is your go-to resource if evacuation becomes necessary. Keep your kit in an easy-to-reach location, and make sure every household member knows where it is.

Here’s what CAL FIRE recommends including:

  • 3-day supply of non-perishable food and 3 gallons of water per person
  • A map with at least two evacuation routes
  • Prescription medications and personal hygiene items
  • Extra clothing, glasses, or contact lenses
  • Car keys, credit cards, cash, and valuables
  • First aid kit, flashlight, and extra batteries
  • Copies of important documents (passports, IDs, birth certificates)
